We rode the HBM memory super-cycle and rang the register before the crowd.
Summary
Micron was our highest-conviction semiconductor long — the AI build-out turned DRAM and HBM from commodity to scarce. We captured the up-cycle and exited into strength at $420 as the complex reached peak psychology, the opening move of our turn cautious on semis, now expressed through the NVIDIA short.
Business Overview
Micron is a leading DRAM and NAND manufacturer. HBM (high-bandwidth memory) is the AI-critical product where supply was effectively sold out.
Investment Thesis
- 01
HBM scarcity
HBM3E was effectively sold out, and pricing power returned to memory for the first time in a cycle.
- 02
Cycle leverage
Memory is the highest-beta way to play AI capacity; the operating leverage on a pricing up-cycle is enormous.
- 03
Discipline on the exit
We sold strength at $420 rather than marry the cycle — the same read that underwrites our NVIDIA short today.
Valuation & Price Target
We exited at $420, roughly +75%, as the risk/reward flattened at cycle-peak sentiment.
Catalysts
- HBM sold-out disclosures
- DRAM spot and contract price increases
- AI-capacity guide-ups
Key Risks
- Memory cyclicality and peak pricing
- Inventory-correction risk
- A broad semiconductor de-rating
Bottom Line
A clean cyclical win, closed on discipline. Realized +75.0%.
