We anchored to quality into the AI-capex narrative near the highs — and respected our stop.

Summary

We added Microsoft at $415 as a mega-cap anchor into the AI-capex story. The market repriced hyperscaler capex ROI and Azure-deceleration risk before our catalyst arrived, and we stopped out at $375. The timing was poor: we bought strength, honored the stop, and stepped aside.

Business Overview

Microsoft spans Azure, Microsoft 365 and Copilot, Windows, and gaming. Azure and Copilot monetization are the AI thesis; the rest is ballast.

Investment Thesis

  1. 01

    What we got right

The franchise and the Copilot optionality are intact. This was a timing loss, not a thesis break.

  2. 02

    What we got wrong

We underestimated the market's sensitivity to capex intensity and Azure-growth optics at a full multiple. We paid up at the wrong moment in the narrative.

  3. 03

    Discipline held

The stop did its job and capped the loss. We would rather re-enter a great business at a better price than average down into a de-rating.

Valuation & Price Target

We stopped at $375, roughly −9.6%. The mistake was entry timing into a full valuation, and we would revisit the name lower.

Catalysts

  • Capex-intensity scrutiny
  • Azure-deceleration commentary
  • Multiple compression across mega-cap AI

Key Risks

  • Bought near the highs — poor entry timing
  • A shift in the capex-ROI narrative

Bottom Line

A timing loss on a quality name, cut on discipline. Realized −9.6%; we would revisit lower.
